Extract a Character Color Palette from a Screenshot
A single eyedropper click gives you a pixel, not a trustworthy palette. The useful answer comes from choosing the right frame, sampling a region, and writing down the version.
Choose a frame that can answer the question
To extract a character color palette from a screenshot, start with a frame that shows the intended appearance under neutral, readable lighting. Then sample several interior pixels from each flat region, summarize those samples, and record the exact frame and version. One eyedropper click is not a palette. It is one pixel carrying every lighting, edge, compression, and compositing decision in that spot.
Decide what you are measuring before opening a tool. “The red in this frame” is a valid target. “The character’s official red” is a much larger claim that a screenshot cannot settle on its own. An animation frame contains scene lighting, color grading, atmosphere, motion blur, antialiasing, and often streaming compression. Your method should preserve that boundary instead of quietly erasing it.
Look for a front-facing or gently angled view with large uninterrupted color regions. Avoid sunset scenes, colored magical light, underwater casts, heavy bloom, translucent clothing, and frames where the material occupies only a few pixels. If the character has several outfits or forms, name the one you are sampling. “Classic red vest” is useful. “Main color” is not.

Pick up to seven pixels
Try the bright edge, the dark edge, and the quiet middle. The border is real image data, but it is a bad estimate of the flat material color.

The workbench uses a synthetic flat region so the ground truth is controlled. On a real screenshot, safe pixels will vary more. That variation is information, not a reason to hunt for one convenient click.
Mark safe pixels before opening the eyedropper
A useful sample comes from the quiet interior of a region. The worst samples often look tempting: a crisp edge, a bright highlight, or a deep shadow. They are easy to point at and poor representatives of the base surface.
Edges are mixtures
Antialiasing softens a boundary by mixing the foreground and background over several pixels. A dark outline can bleed into the clothing color; a pale background can lift it. The mixed edge is correct for rendering that frame, but it is not a clean estimate of either region. Move inward until adjacent pixels stop changing sharply.
Highlights and shadows describe light, not just material
A highlight may be nearly white while the same fabric is deep red elsewhere. A cast shadow can shift both brightness and hue. If the palette is meant to document the rendered frame, keep these as separate roles—base, highlight, shadow. If the goal is a compact practice palette, select the midtone and record that highlights and shadows were excluded.
Compression noise is not a tiny design decision
JPEG-style compression and video encoding divide images into blocks and simplify color information. Around a hard edge, a pixel may pick up ringing or block contamination. PNG preserves pixel values losslessly, but a PNG screenshot can still capture a previously compressed stream. Zoom in. If the supposedly flat area looks speckled or blocky, sample a wider region and report the source quality.
Sample a region, not a lucky pixel
Collect five to nine interior samples spread across the same material region. The points should be far enough apart to reveal a gradient but close enough to represent one visual role. Do not trace a diagonal that crosses from midtone into shadow and then call the spread “natural variation.”
Adobe’s pixel-value tools make it possible to inspect single points or averaged neighborhoods. Either can work if you state what you used. A small averaged sample suppresses one noisy pixel. Several separate points are better for discovering that the region is not flat in the first place. Keep the raw values until the end; do not round every sample before summarizing them.

For a compact palette, the median of each RGB channel is a practical summary. It is not physically perfect, and channel-wise medians can produce a combination that was not one exact sampled pixel. Its advantage is robustness: one specular highlight or dark contaminant does not drag the result as strongly as an average. If color science or production matching is the goal, work in an appropriate color-managed space and use a method designed for that task. This guide is for documented web reference palettes.
Turn the samples into a documented palette
The swatches are only half the deliverable. A trustworthy palette tells the next person what was measured, what was ignored, and how to repeat the work.

Store RGB because it is close to the sampled data, HEX because it is convenient on the web, and HSB because it makes practice adjustments easier to discuss. HSB is not a universal interchange standard; implementations can differ in details. Record the RGB/HEX source value first, then note the conversion tool or code if exact reproduction matters.
Add a revision instead of silently replacing the old swatch. A better source frame, corrected appearance, or revised threshold may justify a change. The revision lets an old challenge result remain understandable. It also turns “the color changed” into a traceable editorial decision rather than a mystery.
A worked four-color example
Here is the complete controlled example behind this guide. CF-01 is an original test frame made for Toon Tone, not a franchise screenshot. That removes copyright and unknown source grading while preserving the real sampling problem: four material regions, a highlight, a shadow, an outline, and a narrow warm rim light that must not leak into the base colors.

Repeating CF-01 gives the same raw values because the source is fixed. A second, warmer test frame would be logged as CF-02 rather than averaged into this one without explanation. Notice what the workflow did not produce: an “official” palette. It produced a defensible answer to a narrower question, with raw samples another person can check.
Know when the screenshot is not enough
Stop when the image cannot support the claim. Tiny regions, translucent materials, severe grading, uncertain outfits, or repeated compression can make a precise swatch look more authoritative than it is.
In those cases, find a better source, publish a range, label the result as frame-specific, or leave the part out. A missing swatch is better than a false standard. Toon Tone uses the same rule when choosing playable parts: the color needs to be stable enough to name, review, and revise.
When your record is ready, put it beside one versioned Toon Tone fan-made reference. Compare the named appearance, part boundary, source frame, and revision before comparing the swatches. A difference can reveal two source choices rather than one bad eyedropper reading.
